Crew of CALLISTA|Relief Captain Relief Captain

Captain: Roland Schaeffer

Captain Roland and Chef/ First Mate Vanessa, both vibrant and energetic, hail from Cape Town, South Africa. Roland and Vanessa met when in their 20´s and were married in February 2010.

Previously, Captain Roland worked in the corporate environment, ending at the pinnacle of his successful career managing his own business servicing the dental and medical industry. From being a Sea Scout in his youth then followed his passion for the sea by obtaining his RYA Yacht Master Offshore – subsequently receiving his RYA Yacht Master Ocean certification. Roland has delivered yachts professionally, doing numerous trans-Atlantic crossings (amongst others) accumulating in excess of 100 000 Nautical Miles. The majority of these deliveries were for the TUI group (Moorings/Sunsail)

Roland’s first transatlantic blue water passage in 2004 brought him to the shores of the Caribbean. It was during one of those yacht deliveries in 2005 that Roland came across Tradewinds Cruise Club and worked as a Charter Captain managing a Privilege 48 Ft catamaran in and around the Caribbean windward islands, operating primarily out of Jolly Harbour in Antigua, going on to work with Vanessa on numerous and larger catamarans for Tradewinds Cruise Club in 2012 and then into the private sector in 2013. His other passions include kite surfing, cycling, scuba diving, free diving and fishing.

Relief Captain
Hugh White grew up in Pretoria, South Africa spending weekends at the local lake where his passion for sailing and water sports started as a youth. After graduation Hugh went straight into yachting and completed a Mediterranean season in France where his passion for the yachting industry grew. Followed by a 12,000 nautical mile delivery which included two Atlantic crossings and sailing up the east coast of Africa Hugh’s enthusiasm for sailing, fishing and diving only increased. Hugh then joined Callista in the Caribbean as the deck/stew where he sailed with Roland and Vanessa for two years learning the ropes of a charter captain. Hugh is an eager diver and always keen for an adventure!

Vanessa holds a diploma in fashion design but soon discovered that the hospitality industry is where her passion lies. For years a deli and coffee shop owner in the heart of prestigious London-Marylebone Lane- and prior to that, spent many years in the restaurant industry all over the world, from South Africa to Honduras to Europe. Having worked in the food and hospitality industry for so many years ensures without a doubt that your expectations will be exceeded. The guest book is testament to Vanessa’s great skills in the galley. Her creative flair and ability to cater to challenging dietary requirements is nothing short of incredible. Vanessa tends to lean towards a very healthy al fresco style preparation. (Roland is kept very busy on the grill!)

In 2010 Roland and Vanessa decided to put their individual skill sets together. They sold their respective businesses and embarked on a plan to work on yachts full time. They contacted Tradewinds Cruise Club with whom Roland has had a long standing relationship. The rest as they say is history.
Both growing up in South Africa has taught Vanessa and Roland to appreciate and indulge in numerous outdoor activities, whether it be hiking, skiing, river rafting , kayaking or scuba diving to name a few.

Vanessa and Roland are both qualified PADI Rescue Diver’s. Roland is also a qualified PADI OPEN WATER INSTRUCTOR and offers Discover Scuba Diving for non certified divers onboard SV CALLISTA ! Their guests can be sure they are in very safe hands ! There is NO certification after a DSD course.
In addition Roland is an instructor in wreck, deep, navigation, drift, Fish ID , nitrox scuba diving specialities.
Vanessa is a trained ASHTANGA yoga instructor and has added Powerboat Level 2 to her qualifications.

The flavour of Roland and Vanessa’s charters lends itself towards getting off the beaten track, finding paths less travelled but also feel very comfortable offering an itinerary which includes lively beach bars and popular locations. They are open to lifestyle charters of more than one week thereby allowing the freedom to island hop.

The grill is utilized a lot, providing a healthy outdoor style of food preparation and still managing to retain a feeling of luxury.

Roland is a South African citizen and Vanessa carries both British and South African citizenship. Their home language is English however speak fluent Afrikaans. Both are non-smokers.

Being extremely service orientated, Roland and Vanessa feel very strongly that to provide a high level of service, responsiveness and speed a crew of 3 is best.

3rd Crew member Stew/Deckhand
Maxime was born and raised on the East Coast of South Africa. She studied Hospitality Management for 3 years and worked in various luxury hotels for three years before deciding to adapt her skill set to work in yachting and see more of the world.

She began her career as a sole stewardess on a sailing yacht in Monaco and began her first circumnavigation embarking on an incredible adventure to sail the world. After this she joined The Oyster World Rally and also participated in the Oyster Antigua Regatta which really ignited her passion and love for sailing. She has sailed around 52 000 nm during her career thus far and sailed the North and South Atlantic, the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and Caribbean Sea
Maxime has a vibrant positive attitude paired with good sense of humor and strives to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere on board.

She hopes to make your stay onboard Callista an unforgettable experience.

June 2022
I wanted to thank you again for an extraordinary experience this past week. You three were pivotal to that experience. The quality of service, the enthusiasm, the confidence you inspired, the selflessness, and the pleasure of your company put everyone at ease and made for a fantastic trip start to finish. Every dish was gourmet and special. Every drink was superb and had its own special twist. Every sail was fun and peaceful, despite a couple of choppy days. The boat was always clean, tidy, and organized from stem to stern. The respect and affection you exhibit toward each other are a joy to watch and integral to the wonderful support you provide your guests as a team. We had such an amazing time. We miss you already and will never forget this time with you. Our only disappointment is that your days on Callista are done. We wish you all the best with the new boat and the exciting new opportunities and experiences that presents for you.

Best wishes,
DC
February 2022 J Family in the BVI
Hello Roland, Vanessa & Max,

Once again I wish to say how wonderful our trip to the BVI was and that is completely all due to your fabulous service to us all.

Also, our exit from BVI went rather smoothly, other than Bruce’s and Jennifer’s bag that needed to be searched (but all good) and somehow we managed to depart without having any Antigen tests completed. Although, I’m not saying this is a good thing, but I was relieved. I think it was due to us all being on a private plane back to Costa Rica, which also mean’t we didn’t have to complete the CR Portal as we didn’t have to exit into the main terminal.

I sadly came crashing back to reality once we arrived at our home in Sarasota and tried to keep the standard of food up to Vanessa’s high standard and I failed miserably! It took three of us to prepare a dinner on Friday that barely reached the bar that was set high by all of you! But somehow we managed.

Just really wanted you all to know how much we all appreciated everything you did to make our holiday truly spectacular. Right down to Max’s beautiful table centre pieces and napkin presentations. They were all so stunning!

Please let Max know that if she ever creates a blog or photos of the wondering “Orange” Birkenstock shoes. I’d love to follow their journey and hers.

We would love to hear more about your next journey around the world with Bill and Cheryl. Especially if she does create a Blog please send it my way. Sending you all the best for a continued great season in the BVI and Caribbean in 2022:)

All the best,
Karen J

Roland-

Just a quick note to you and Vanessa to let you know we arrived safely back in Dallas with zero travel difficulty other than empty airports populated mostly by folks in masks and latex gloves. Wanted also to again say thank you for a terrific week aboard the SV Callista...you two and Julia treated us royally and made it a special trip. We appreciate all of the extra effort all around...from special cocktails and creative/tasty food to early morning fishing and afternoon tubing....it was all above par and much appreciated.

Our experience there is in stark contrast to the “shelter in place” environment we find ourselves here in Dallas. While not yet mandatory, most everything is closed, with a few restaurants offering pick up or delivery only. Grocery stores are open but strongly preferring pick up and delivery. Roads are empty as no one is venturing to office, school, church or elsewhere. A bleak world here compared to the blissful time in clear water with blue skies under full sail.

We miss our time aboard already.
Thanks again. Stay safe in the Leewards. Please convey our thanks to Vanessa.

Christmas 2019
Thank you Roland, Vanessa and Hugh for providing a wonderful environment for our family's first vacation at sea. My wife and son both love the BVI and it is a thrill to experience it from Callista. The boat was a perfect fit for our extended family and endless rounds of Rummikub. Your dedication to service shine through everyday. We wanted for nothing!

It was a joy to see our boys Jack, Will and Nash thrive in the safe environment you provided. They will remember this trip for the rest of their lives.

Oh! And lets not forget that Elizabeth had a perfect 50th birthday celebration. She was, afterall, the inspiration for the trip!!

March 2019

Roland & Vanessa were absolutely amazing! The deck hand, Hugh, was the most incredible 20 yr old I have met.

They were a great team to dive with and handled our 5 divers flawlessly. The sea life was as if they called and appeared - sharks, rays, lobster, barracuda, etc.

The food was outstanding!

I can’t say enough about this crew. I just wish they had a 10pax for our growing family when we return! We would love to sail with them again.

I think next time we would be looking towards St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Thank you for everything!!!

The crew was the highlight of our charter. We had to switch boats unexpectantly with one week in advance and it went smoothly. The cuisine was great, water sports were fun, and all three of the crew were great - nice, knowledgeable, patient!

Having done numerous charters over the past 20 years I must say Callista and her crew are tops!!! This is a wonderful catamaran with an outstanding captain, chef, and first mate. Roland, Vanessa, and Hugh went out of their way to make our trip enjoyable in every possible way. Whether it was scuba diving/beach excursions/snorkeling/or adapting to strict dietary needs the crew of Callista outperformed every request with ease and professionalism......The food and service were outstanding.

Christmas week 2018
Callista, the fabulous crew and the BVI were fantastic.
Captain Roland, his fantastic wife/chef/dive master and above all person Vanessa and young Hugh were nothing less than fantastic.
They had everything we wanted before sailing, we went everywhere we wanted to go, we did everything we wanted to do, we ate like Kings and never had nothing wrong.
Callista is in impecable shape and condition and very well equipped.
We scuba dived, wake boarded, paddle boarded, kayaked, snorkeled, water skied, fished, rented scooters and exchanged Christmas presents. What more can you ask for?
Please share my note with the crew, the owner and thank you for your recommendation.

Best regards and Happy New Year
Miguel

Thanksgiving week 2018
Today is such a blue day for us!! We had the best time but are so sad our fun sailing charter is over! We honestly had the most incredible week with Roland, Vanessa and Hugh aboard Callista! They went out of their way to make us feel at home and comfortable and would not let us lift a finger. They took us to the most beautiful snorkeling spots and showed us beautiful remote beaches and anchoring spots!! Roland introduced Bruce, Graham, Tess and Bryn to diving as PADI certified, and also arranged for us to go Conch and lobster hunting with a guide. Both were very cool experiences!
Our favorite spot was probably Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Lee Bay! On Bruce’s Birthday, The crew decorated with signs, balloons, and hats and Vanessa prepared the most amazing surf and turf dinner and delicious vanilla cake with marshmallow filling for dessert. We got to relax and enjoy our family and also enjoy the company of our amazing crew!

Our week sailing with Roland and Vanessa throughout the BVIs was a unique and fantastic experience. Together, they are a skilled captain, gourmet chef, inn-keeper, dive master, tour guide, trip planner, bar tender, and just plain fun to be around. They did all this with impressive skill and energy and went out of their way to make sure we were having fun every minute .....which we did! It was a vacation not to be forgotten.

Sailing the BVI's has been a dream for me for years. We feel so blessed to have chartered Amazing Lady. She is new and so gorgeous and the photos do not give justice to the space and comfort on board. Then the crew!!! Wow!! Two thumbs up to Roland and Vanessa for taking such good care of us!! They understood our needs and wants and made everything happen that we had wished for. Nothing was left out. They are attentive, helpful and experts at what they do. Thanks guys for helping make this dream come true in such a fantastic way!! Best wishes and lots of love from us! John, Nina and boys
